You do not have to furnish every room at once. Start with the pieces you use every day, then make the space work for the way you actually live.

1. Measure rooms before shopping. 2. Measure doorways and stairwells too. 3. Set a budget for each room. 4. Buy essential pieces first. 5. Leave clear walking paths.

6. Choose a sofa that fits the room. 7. Test chairs for comfort. 8. Use lamps where overhead lighting falls short. 9. Keep cords out of walking areas. 10. Choose washable fabrics when practical.

11. Use storage that fits your daily routine. 12. Keep frequently used items within reach. 13. Hang curtains after measuring carefully. 14. Check rug sizes with tape on the floor. 15. Leave space to open drawers and doors.

16. Inspect secondhand furniture for damage and pests. 17. Avoid blocking vents. 18. Anchor furniture according to manufacturer instructions. 19. Bring in personal photographs or artwork. 20. Live in the room before buying more.

If you rent, get permission before painting, drilling or changing fixtures. If you are preparing to sell, arrange furniture so visitors can understand the size and purpose of each room.
