A rental should feel like home, and you should know what to do when something goes wrong. Start by learning the property's systems and the owner's maintenance process.

1. Locate exits and keep them clear. 2. Learn the smoke and carbon monoxide detector locations and follow testing instructions. 3. Save the emergency maintenance number. 4. Report faulty locks promptly.

5. Report leaks and moisture early. 6. Keep heaters away from combustible items and follow their instructions. 7. Avoid overloaded outlets and damaged cords. 8. Keep windows and stairs free of obstructions.

9. Follow manufacturer instructions for anchoring furniture. 10. Learn who to contact about gas, electrical or plumbing concerns. 11. Review renters insurance options and understand what your policy covers.

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or face an immediate danger, leave the area and contact emergency services or the appropriate utility from a safe location.

Document maintenance requests and follow up through the owner's stated process. Do not attempt repairs to gas or electrical systems yourself.
